S: My name’s Herman Smith, I was borned in Hot Springs, North Carolina, in Madison County, went to school at Hot Springs, went to the fourth grade, now I’m a-going to tell you a little story.

S: I joined the CCs at Asheville, North Carolina, in nineteen thirty-five, this is thirty-nine, and I’ve been in, been a-cooking for three years.

I: Is that all?

S: I guess that’s about all.
