coon dog noun A dog trained specifically to hunt raccoons.

1939 Hall Coll (Cataloochee NC) We went up Nettle Creek. We had a coon dog. He treed a coon in the cliff. 1975 GSMNP-62:3 He’d circle around and directly, he’d come back and set down, and he’d go barking every breath up the tree. He was a good coon dog. 2006 Encycl Appalachia 872 Blue Ticks, Black and Tans, and Redbones have been popular coon dogs.
