ARENA is a new international organization of scholars engaged in exchange and collaboration across national and academic boundaries that grew out of a series of international conferences on nationalism in the Americas and the Atlantic world.
ARENA’s focus is nationalism, one of the central issues of our times. Though nationalism has been at the center of academic discussion, the Americas remain generally neglected. ARENA aims to broaden the current scope of the conversation on nationalism and review prevailing theories in light of the experience of the Americas.
ARENA is based at the Richard Walker Institute of International and Area Studies at the University of South Carolina but its activities encompass an international community of scholars that transcends academic and national boundaries.
ARENA sponsors international conferences on topics of broad interest to a great variety of scholars and it takes part in the conferences of other organizations.
ARENA sponsors H-Nationalism, part of H-Net sponsored by the Humanities and Social Sciences Online internet discussion groups, with over 900 subscribers from all parts of the world.
ARENA will sponsor an exciting new book series: New Directions in Nationalism Studies, featuring innovative approaches to the study of nations, nationalism, and national identity.
