The School of Visual Art and Design advances creative and professional practice, critical study, and teaching of the visual arts. We value experimentation, engaged learning, and the enrichment of life through art.
Our students draw, paint, sculpt, build, illustrate, photograph, design, and print. They create films, videos, video games, graphic novels, multi-media art, and more. They pursue research in art history and art education, and they teach in South Carolina’s K-12 schools. After graduation, they go on to careers in media, graphic design, photography, teaching, museums, and much more. Some also further their education in graduate programs across the country and internationally.
Our 32 full time faculty members are dedicated teachers and accomplished professionals with terminal degrees and national reputations in their fields. Supported by dedicated professional staff, they work closely and individually with our students as educators and mentors.
We are located in historic McMaster College, at the corner of Senate and Pickens Street, on the beautiful campus of the University of South Carolina, in the capital city of Columbia. Our building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and was renovated in the 1990s. Today, it is an 85,000-square-foot facility specifically designed for the study and creation of the visual arts.
We offer BA, BFA, MA, MAT, IMA, and MFA degrees, and we’re accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.
