Dr. Kris Ercums is Curator of Global Contemporary and Asian Art at the Spencer Museum of Art. He earned his PhD from the University of Chicago, during which he received a Fulbright-Hays Fellowship for dissertation research in China. His research interests include pan-Asian visual modernity, Asian contemporary artistic practice, postcolonial science fiction, and queer studies. Since joining the Spencer Museum of Art in 2007, Ercums spearheaded the reconceptualization of the museum’s permanent collection galleries into long-term thematic exhibitions and implemented a dynamic residency program that invites artists from the world over to collaborate with the local Lawrence, KS community while producing innovative new works. Most recently, he curated the monumental 2016 exhibition, Temporal Turn: Art and Speculation in Contemporary Asia, which explores a rich mosaic of ideas about time and history from a generation of artists embedded in what has been dubbed “the Asian Century.”
