The College of Arts and Sciences is proud to sponsor the South Carolina Region II Science and Engineering Fair. The fair is the premier science competition in the South Carolina midlands for students in grades 5th to 12th. It takes place in mid March at the Carolina Coliseum. Each year more than 600 students from Calhoun, Clarendon, Fairfield, Kershaw, Lexington, Newberry, Orangeburg, Richland and Sumter Counties participate and compete for more than 200 awards. They come from more than 60 schools and are motivated to become involved with research in science, mathematics and engineering. Their projects are evaluated by about 250 judges. The top female and male high school winners are sent, together with two teachers, and four student observers with all the expenses covered by the College of Arts and Sciences to compete in the largest international pre-college science fair in the world: the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). They compete against more than 1500 projects from 70 countries, and during the past four years six of the eight student winners placed in the top four in their respective divisions at the ISEF. Thus, the South Carolina Region II Science and Engineering Fair is one of the premier science fairs in the world!
