Dr. Koester is the author of the nationally implemented Agnes Pflumm science education novels, the product of twenty five years of teaching and research on bringing students to science through the creative arts. She is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Furman University in biology and received her masters’ degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where she researched and developed curriculum for teaching science through the visual arts, creative writing and drama, music and movement. She earned her Ph.D. in Teaching and Learning from the University of South Carolina. Her book, Science Teachers Who Draw: The Red Is Always There, emerged from her Project Draw for Science collaborative action research initiative at the Center for Science Education.  The study is ongoing, with participating teachers learning to employ drawing practice to deepen their content knowledge and make science visible and meaningful to all students.
