Department of Mathematics
More than mere technical expertise, our programs include research, service, and interdisciplinary studies.
Albert Einstein, who knew quite a bit about such things, said that “pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.” The Department of Mathematics at the University of South Carolina puts this “poetry” into action with an outstanding program of teaching, research, and service. Our master’s and doctoral programs have been cited for excellence by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education.
The department is known for its outstanding instruction at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Faculty members have won numerous University-wide teaching awards, and students in the department have been the recipients of an impressive array of honors, including several Goldwater Scholarships, Knowles Math Teaching Fellowships, and a National Physical Science Consortium Fellowship.
Our programs are diverse, and provide the technical expertise and interdisciplinary skills needed by the modern mathematician. We offer programs leading to the Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts, Master of Science, and the Doctor of Philosophy, including a Ph.D. option of a concentration in Applied and Computational Mathematics that cuts across disciplinary boundaries. The department also offers programs leading to the Master of Mathematics (designed primarily for students who wish to enter a Ph.D. program in mathematics) and, in conjunction with the College of Education, a Master of Arts in Teaching degree.
The department is also home to the internationally-recognized Interdisciplinary Mathematics Institute (IMI) for advanced research with potential applications. The IMI carries on cooperative projects with leading universities, including Princeton, Stanford, and Rice, and also interacts with various University of South Carolina programs in the fields of Nanoscience, Engineering, and Science.
