Scholarships and Awards

Unless otherwise specified, students applying for an award and/or scholarship must follow the application procedures.

 The Francis W. Bradley Award in Romance Languages rewards undergraduate French and Spanish majors for academic achievement. Nominations to be made by USC faculty no later than March 1 the semester of graduation.

Eligibility: advanced Spanish major (senior or rising senior - minimum of 18 hours at the 300-level and above completed or in progress). Minimum GPA in Spanish of 3.5; minimum overall GPA of 3.0. Awards are available to Spanish students in even-numbered years.

Frequency: Awards made once a year (March), depending on available funds.

Amount: Variable.

Term of Award: a single semester.

Application, upon nomination, to include:

  1. Faculty nomination
  2. Transcript (official or unofficial)
  3. Two (2) recommendations from (preferably Spanish) faculty.

 The Kyrl Leighton-Faxford de Gravelines Scholarship is awarded each year to one, two or three students majoring in foreign language who demonstrate:

  1. A sincere desire to teach foreign languages as a career as evidenced by a statement from the candidate and recommendations of teachers.
  2. Clear excellence in the candidate’s academic record, particularly in the language of study as evidenced by a transcript and vita.

Each candidate’s nomination dossier should include a vita, an up-to-date transcript, a personal statement of career intention, and two letters of recommendation from faculty familiar with the candidate’s work. The dossier needs to be submitted to the respective Program Director by March 1st.

Scholarship recipients will be announced by April 15 of each year. The scholarships are awarded as tuition remission for the following fall semester at USC-Columbia. 

 Sigma Delta Pi Honorary Society

Membership is open to Spanish majors and minors with outstanding academic records.  Each year students may apply to membership in the Society. This is an honor for Spanish students, and colors of the honorary society should be worn at graduation. Every year the National Office awards scholarships and stipends for study abroad to undergraduate students, application through Chi-Chapter Advisor, Prof. Cari Kepner-Lee (

Eligibility: Must be at least a second semester sophomore (completed at least 45 credit hours total – can include AP/IB credits). Must have a minimum 3.2 cumulative GPA. Must have a minimum 3.0 Spanish GPA. Must be eligible to take at least 300 level courses AND have completed through at least Spanish 302. Must have completed or is currently enrolled in at least one course in Hispanic literature or Hispanic Culture at the 300 level or higher with at least a B.
