Spanish Courses taught at USC

Below, you will find a list of the most commonly taught Spanish courses at USC and their respective prerequisites.

SPAN 109 - Beginning Spanish I

Introduction to grammar and practical vocabulary necessary for fundamental communication skills.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Never previously studied Spanish
•  Not studied Spanish within the past five years
•  Scored an S1 on the USC Spanish placement exam

NOTE:  Those students who do not have a USC Spanish placement score must complete the form to Request Exemption from the Foreign Language Placement Exam.


SPAN 110
- Beginning Spanish II

Introduction to grammar and practical vocabulary necessary for fundamental communication skills.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed SPAN109

 
SPAN 121- Elementary Spanish

Grammar and vocabulary necessary for fundamental communication skills.

This course is restricted to those students who meet the following requirement.
•  Scored an S2 on the USC Spanish placement exam


SPAN
122 - Basic Proficiency in Spanish 

Practice and further development of essential listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed SPAN110
•  Successfully completed SPAN111  (This course is only taught on Fort Jackson campus.)
•  Successfully completed SPAN121
•  Scored a 3 on either the AP Spanish Language or AP Spanish Literature exam
•  Scored an S3 on the USC Spanish placement exam

 
SPAN 130 - Accelerated Basic Proficiency in Spanish

Accelerated development of essential listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills in Spanish.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Never previously studied Spanish
•  Not studied Spanish within the past five years
•  Scored an S2 on the USC Spanish placement exam
 

SPAN 209- Intermediate Spanish I

Further development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Use of authentic cultural materials. 

 

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed SPAN122 (minimum grade of C)
•  Scored a 3 on both the AP Spanish Language and AP Spanish Literature exams
•  Scored a 4 or 5 on either the AP Spanish Language or AP Spanish Literature exam
•  Scored an S5 on the USC Spanish Phase II placement exam

SPAN 210 - Intermediate Spanish II

Continued development of the four skills practiced in SPAN 209.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed SPAN209 (minimum grade of C)
•  Scored a 3 on both the AP Spanish Language and AP Spanish Literature exams
•  Scored a 4 or 5 on the Upper-Level IB Spanish B Exam
•  Scored an SB on the USC Spanish Phase II placement exam

 
SPAN 230 - Accelerated Intermediate Spanish

Practice and further rapid development of accurate skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed SPAN122 or SPAN130
•  Scored a 3 on both the AP Spanish Language and AP Spanish Literature exams
•  Scored a 4 or 5 on either the AP Spanish Language or AP Spanish Literature exam
•  Scored an S3 on the USC Spanish placement exam


SPAN 302
- Advanced Grammar Practice

Advanced practice of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•   Successfully completed SPAN210 (minimum grade of B)
•   Scored an S6 on the USC Spanish Phase II placement exam

 

SPAN 303- Cultural Readings for Composition

 

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•   Successfully completed SPAN302 (formerly SPAN 309)
•   Scored an SD on the USC Spanish Phase II placement exam

 

SPAN 304- Cultural Readings for Conversation

 

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•   Successfully completed SPAN302 (formerly SPAN 309)
•   Scored an SD on the USC Spanish Phase II placement exam


SPAN 305
- Working with Hispanic Clients

Crosscultural approaches to interactions with persons of Hispanic origin in a variety of professional settings. Readings, speakers, media. Taught in Spanish.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed SPAN210
•  Scored an SD, S6 or S7 on the USC Spanish Phase II placement exam
•  Consent of the instructor of the course


SPAN 312
- Introduction to Reading Hispanic Literary texts

Approaches to reading literary texts through carefully selected readings from different genres

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed SPAN 302 (minimum grade of C+)
•  Scored an SD or S7 on the USC Spanish Phase II placement exam
• Consent of the instructor of the course
