French courses taught at USC

Below, you will find a list of the most commonly taught French courses at USC and their respective prerequisites.

FREN 109 - Beginning French I

Introduction to grammar and practical vocabulary necessary for fundamental communication skills.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Never previously studied French
•  Not studied French within the past five years
•  Scored an F1 on the USC French placement exam

NOTE:  Those students who do not have a USC French placement score must complete the form to Request Exemption from the Foreign Language Placement Exam.
 

FREN 110 - Beginning French II

Introduction to grammar and practical vocabulary necessary for fundamental communication skills.

This course is restricted to those students who meet the following requirement.
•  Successfully completed FREN109


FREN 121
- Elementary French

Grammar and vocabulary necessary for fundamental communication skills.

This course is restricted to those students who meet the following requirement.
•  Scored an F2 on the USC French placement exam


FREN 122
- Basic Proficiency in French

Practice and further development of essential listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed FREN110
•  Successfully completed FREN121
•  Scored a 3 on either the AP French Language or AP French literature exam
•  Scored an F3 on the USC French placement exam
 

FREN 209 - Reading and Written Expression

Readings in French; grammar, basic writing, and composition.

 

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed FREN122
•  Scored a 3 on both the AP French Language and AP French Literature exams
•  Scored a 4 or 5 on either the AP French Language or AP French Literature exam
•  Scored an F5 on the USC French Phase II placement exam

FREN 210 - Oral Communication

Practice in conversation involving authentic listening materials; vocabulary building.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed FREN122
•  Scored a 3 on both the AP French Language and AP French Literature exams
•  Scored a 4 or 5 on either the AP French Language or AP French Literature exam
•  Scored a 4 or 5 on the Upper-Level IB French B Exam
•  Scored an F5 on the USC French Phase II placement exam

 
FREN 307 - Advanced Oral Practice

Development and maintenance of speaking and listening skills at the advanced level. Offered Pass-Fail only.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed FREN210
•  Scored a 6 or 7 on the Upper-Level IB French B Exam
•  Scored an F6 on the USC French Phase II placement exam

 
FREN 309 - Reading French Texts

Reading, discussion, and written analysis of French texts, both literary and nonliterary.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed FREN209
•  Scored a 6 or 7 on the Upper-Level IB French B Exam
•  Scored an F6 on the USC French Phase II placement exam

 
FREN 310 - Advanced Oral Communication

Current issues and events presented in French-language media. Discussion and presentations in French provide practice with advanced structures and idiomatic speech.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed both FREN209 and FREN210
•  Scored a 6 or 7 on the Upper-Level IB French B Exam
•  Scored an F6 on the USC French Phase II placement exam

 
FREN 311 - French Composition

Practice in French composition; intensive review of French grammar.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed FREN209
•  Scored a 6 or 7 on the Upper-Level IB French B Exam
•  Scored an F6 on the USC French Phase II placement exam

 
FREN 330 - The French Theatre Experience

Project work in the production of plays in the French language. Includes readings in French theatre and related materials. May be repeated once on a Pass-Fail basis for elective credit.

This course is restricted to those students who meet both of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed FREN122
•  Consent of the instructor of the course
