German courses taught at USC

Below, you will find a list of the most commonly taught German courses at USC and their respective prerequisites.

GERM 109 - Beginning German I

Introduction to grammar and practical vocabulary necessary for fundamental communication skills.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Never previously studied German
•  Not studied German within the past five years
•  Scored a G1 on the USC German placement exam

NOTE:  Those students who do not have a USC German placement score must complete the form to Request Exemption from the Foreign Language Placement Exam.

 
GERM 110 - Beginning German II

Introduction to grammar and practical vocabulary necessary for fundamental communication skills.

This course is restricted to those students who meet the following requirement.
•  Successfully completed GERM109

 
GERM 121 - Elementary German

Grammar and vocabulary necessary for fundamental communication skills.

This course is restricted to those students who meet the following requirement.
•  Scored a G2 on the USC German placement exam


GERM
122 - Basic Proficiency in German

Practice and further development of essential listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed GERM110
•  Successfully completed GERM121
•  Scored a 3 on the AP German Language exam
•  Scored a G3 on the USC German placement exam

   

GERM 210 - Intermediate German

Further development of listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills; discussion of selected literary texts, and current issues; intensive review of basic grammar structures.

 

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed GERM122 
•  Scored a 4 or 5 on the AP German Language exam
•  Scored a 4 or 5 on the Upper-Level IB German B Exam
•  Scored a G5 on the USC German Phase II placement exam

 

GERM 211 - Intermediate German

Reading strategies, a review, and expansion of grammar structures, supplemented with materials concerning current issues.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed GERM210
•  Scored a GB on the USC German Phase II placement exam

 
GERM 310  - German Conversation

Continued practice in the four skills with focus on a selected aspect of German culture and society.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed GERM210 and GERM211
•  Scored a 6 or 7 on the Upper-Level IB German B Exam
•  Scored a G6 on the USC German Phase II placement exam
•  Consent of the instructor of the course
 

GERM 311 - German Conversation and Composition

Continued practice in the four skills with emphasis on developing writing skills and with focus on a specific aspect of German culture.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed GERM210 and GERM211
•  Scored a 6 or 7 on the Upper-Level IB German B Exam
•  Scored a GD on the USC German Phase II placement exam
•  Consent of the instructor of the course
