Italian courses taught at USC

Below, you will find a list of the most commonly taught Italian courses at USC and their respective prerequisites.

ITAL 121 - Elementary Italian

Grammar and practical vocabulary necessary for fundamental communication skills.

 This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Never previously studied Italian
•  Not studied Italian within the past five years
•  Scored an I1 on the USC Italian placement exam


ITAL 122
- Basic Proficiency in Italian

Practice and further development of essential listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed ITAL121
•  Scored a 3 on the AP Italian Language exam
•  Scored an I2 on the USC Italian placement exam


ITAL 130
- Accelerated Basic Proficiency in Italian

Accelerated development of essential listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills to obtain the Basic Proficiency Level in Italian.

•  Never previously studied Italian
•  Not studied Italian within the past five years
•  Scored an I1 on the USC Italian placement exam

 NOTE:  Those students who do not have a USC Italian placement score must complete the form to Request Exemption from the Foreign Language Placement Exam.
 

ITAL 221 - Intermediate Proficiency in Italian I

Practice and rapid development of accurate skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Features BBC television course.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed ITAL122
•  Scored a 4 or 5 on the AP Italian Language exam
•  Scored an I3 on the USC Italian placement exam

 

ITAL 222 - Intermediate Proficiency in Italian II

Practice and further rapid development of accurate skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Features BBC television course.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
  Successfully completed ITAL221
  Scored a 4 or 5 on the Upper-Level IB Italian B exam
  Scored an I4 on the USC Italian placement exam

 

ITAL 230 - Accelerated Intermediate Italian

Accelerated development of intermediate level listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills in Italian.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed ITAL122 or 130
•  Scored a 4 or 5 on the AP Italian exam
•  Scored an I3 on the USC Italian placement exam


ITAL 309
- Vocabulary Building in Italian

Study of bilingual dictionaries, Italian cognates of English words, and false cognates for the purpose of readily increasing active vocabulary.

This course is restricted to those students who meet the following requirement.
•  Successfully completed ITAL222


ITAL 310
- Italian Conversation

Oral practice with advanced protocols of Italian conversation, focusing on perfecting rhythms and tonalities, and on a clear presentation of meaning.

This course is restricted to those students who meet the following requirement.
•  Successfully completed ITAL222


ITAL 311
- Writing in Italian

Introduction to letter, short essay, and creative writing, and to newspaper reports and selected essays as models of self-expression.

This course is restricted to those students who meet the following requirement.
