Japanese courses taught at USC

Below, you will find a list of the most commonly taught Japanese courses at USC and their respective prerequisites.

JAPA 121 - Elementary Japanese

Grammar and practical vocabulary necessary for fundamental communication skills.

 This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Never previously studied Japanese
•  Not studied Japanese within the past five years
•  Scored an J1 on the USC Japanese placement exam


JAPA 122
- Basic Proficiency in Japanese

Practice and further development of essential listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed JAPA121
•  Scored a 3 on the AP Japanese exam
•  Scored an J2 on the USC Japanese placement exam
 

JAPA 221 - Intermediate Japanese I

Review and continuation of fundamentals of the language; development of oral and reading skills.

 

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed JAPA122
•  Scored a 4 or 5 on the AP Japanese exam
•  Scored a J3 on the USC Japanese placement exam

 JAPA 222 - Intermediate Japanese II

Review and continuation of fundamentals of the language; development of written and oral expression.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed JAPA221
•  Scored an J4 on the USC Japanese placement exam

 
JAPA 321 - Advanced Japanese I

Improvement of skills in conversation and composition; advanced reading in modern Japanese materials.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed JAPA222
•  Scored a J5 on the USC Japanese placement exam
 

JAPA 322 - Advanced Japanese II

Continuation of 321, with emphasis on strengthening proficiency in the use of Kanji.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed JAPA321
•  Scored an J6 on the USC Japanese placement exam

 
JAPA 421 - Advanced Japanese III

Development of proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing through advanced studies of authentic Japanese materials.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed JAPA322
•  Scored a J7 on the USC Japanese placement exam
 

JAPA 422 - Advanced Japanese IV

Strengthening proficiency in writing and reading.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed JAPA421
•  Scored an J8 on the USC Japanese placement exam
