Chinese Courses taught at USC

Below, you will find a list of the most commonly taught Chinese courses at USC and their respective prerequisites.

CHIN 121 - Elementary Chinese Mandarin

Grammar and practical vocabulary necessary for fundamental communication skills.

 This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Never previously studied Chinese
•  Not studied Chinesewithin the past five years
•  Scored an C1 on the USC Japanese placement exam


CHIN 122
- Basic Proficiency in Mandarin Chinese

Practice and further development of essential listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed CHIN121
•  Scored a 3 on the AP Chinese exam
•  Scored an C2 on the USC Chinese placement exam
 

CHIN 221 - Intermediate Mandarin Chinese

Continued practice of basic sentence patterns used in modern speech with increased emphasis on reading and acquisition of additional characters.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed CHIN122
•  Scored a 4 or 5 on the AP Chinese exam
•  Scored a C3 on the USC Chinese placement exam

CHIN 222 - Intermediate Mandarin Chinese II

Continued practice of basic sentence patterns used in modern speech with increased emphasis on reading and acquisition of additional characters.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed CHIN221
•  Scored an C4 on the USC Chinese placement exam

 
CHIN 321 - Advanced Intermediate Mandarin Chinese I

Provides advanced intermediate training in spoken and written Chinese. By increasing students’ vocabulary and knowledge of sentence patterns, the course focuses on speaking and writing in coherent, well-formed paragraphs.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed CHIN222
•  Scored a C5 on the USC Chinese placement exam
 

CHIN 322 - Advanced Intermediate Mandarin Chinese II

Continues advanced intermediate training in spoken and written Chinese. Attention is given to complex grammatical patterns, discourse characteristics, and discussions of cultural topics.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed CHIN321
•  Scored an C6 on the USC Chinese placement exam

 
CHIN 421 - Advanced Chinese I

Acquisition of advanced grammar and vocabulary. Emphasis on building oral proficiency in professional settings.

This course is restricted to those students who meet any of the following requirements.
•  Successfully completed CHIN322
•  Scored an C7 on the USC Chinese placement exam
 

CHIN 422 - Advanced Chinese II

Strengthening proficiency in writing and reading.

This course is restricted to those students who meet the following requirement.
•  Successfully completed CHIN421
