Edward Blankenship is an Arabic Instructor and the Arabic Program Director. He holds an MA in Histories and Cultures of Islamic Societies from Harvard University (2014) and a BA in French and in Arabic & Middle Eastern Studies (Linguistic Specialization) from McDaniel College (2013).

A self-proclaimed “language nerd from the-middle-of-nowhere, Maryland” his studies have included living and dead languages, Semitic languages, Indo-European linguistics, contact linguistics, historiographies of the Islamic Conquests, and ancient Iranian history and religions, taking place in the US, Jordan, Palestine, Armenia, Georgia, and the Netherlands. Multilingual and passionate about languages, Edward has spent years sharing his studies online and teaching Arabic (MSA & Levantine dialect), French, and Spanish.

His current research interests lie in the development of the Arabic language and its dialects and language contact between Semitic and non-Semitic languages. He is also interested in registers of speech and the development of colloquials, the development of writing systems, Arabic & foreign language pedagogy, and hybrid language instruction.

When not teaching or researching, Edward enjoys studying a new language, cooking, reading, listening to all genres of music, and chatting over coffee and good food.
