Discussion of Octavia Butler's *Kndred* with John Jennings and Damian Duffy

Monday, October 23, 2017 -
1:00pm to 2:15pm

An informal discussion of Octavia Butler’s novel, KINDRED, in the English Department LoungeJoining us will be artist John Jennings and writer Damian Duffy, the team that created the graphic novel adaptation of Butler’s text. (They will also be giving a talk at 7pm that evening on campus.) We’ll have snacks and a raffle for two signed copies of the graphic novel. Also in attendance will be various faculty members from USC who work in African American literature, language, and cultural studies. All English faculty and graduate students are welcome.

Published in 1979, KINDRED is Butler’s acclaimed novel of time-travel and American slavery, featuring a black woman named Dana who travels back in time to antebellum Virginia and whose very existence depends on saving the lives of her ancestors, black and white. Please note: we’ll be discussing the original book, so it isn’t necessary to have read the graphic novel to participate.

For information about their talk this same evening, at 7pm, view the flyer:
