Optical Illusions of Blackness and Embodiment in EC Comics

Qiana Whitted will explore representations of race and social protest in three “shock” comics published by the Entertaining Comics Group from the early 1950s. She considers the strengths and shortcomings of the company’s approach to challenging racial discrimination during the Korean War and early Civil Rights era against the formal and aesthetic choices of EC’s distinctive genre traditions. This talk is based on a chapter from her forthcoming book on EC for the Comics Culture series at Rutgers University Press.
