First Year English
University of South Carolina

Kaitlyn Smith is a PhD student in the department of English. She studies the literature of the American South and American literature more generally from the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement. Her interests revolve around questions of location, religion, and gender, especially when the three intersect to form unique expressions of identity. Aside from religious and gender studies, her work also deals with spatial theory and the digital humanities. Kaitlyn earned her MA in English with a concentration in southern literature from the University of Georgia in 2016 and taught first-year English at Georgia Highlands College (Go Chargers!) before moving to South Carolina.
