Enhancing Social Vulnerability Mapping for Use in Assessing Coastal Risk

Principal InvestigatorsDr. Christopher T. Emrich and Dr. Susan L. Cutter

Abstract:

This project assisted the NOAA Coastal Services Center (CSC) in enhancing the use of the Social Vulnerability Index (SoVI™) in their coastal decision support tools and other coastal applications. The project developed SoVI™ at the block-group level for the 34 coastal states to permit intra-and interstate comparisons. The project also developed a prototype map service that will depict the social vulnerability at the block group level for each coastal state, for ingestion into Digital Coast product via the Digital Coast Data Access Viewer.

Data:

Social Vulnerability Index data are available for both census tracts and block groups for all coastal states for 2000 and 2010.
