Shifting Terrorism Trends across Time and Space

START: National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Response to Terrorism

A complete understanding of the root causes and the circumstances favoring the emergence of terrorism requires an analysis of the historical and geographic distribution of terrorist activity in conjunction with analyses of the social, political, and economic conditions in locations where terror occurs. This project (2005-2009) assisted in the development of geo-referencing protocols for START’s Global Terrorism Database. The research concentrates on the identification of the overall geographic and temporal trends in terrorist incidents. As understanding of the basic patterns sharpens, more sophisticated analyses are underway using advanced spatial analytical methodologies and geo-visualization tools.
