Mapping River Erosion and Geomorphic Change Caused by an Extreme Flood

Abstract

This project will (1) document locations, patterns, and magnitudes of channel and floodplain erosion, and (2) use these observations to test theoretical concepts and models of erosion and geomorphic change in channels and floodplains during large floods. The study will focus on flooding along the Congaree River and Gills Creek. Mapping will be done using a combination of (1) on-the-ground field work using GIS/GPS uplinking point data to a cellular-based data collector, and (2) large-scale remote sensing change detection using LiDAR pre-flood topographic data and Structure-from-Motion technology for post-flood topographic data.
