MS student Sara Flecher and PhD student Leanne Sulewski were awarded a USGIF (United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation) Scholarship for the 2012-13 academic year! This is a significant achievement resulting from a highly competitive review by an independent panel of GEOINT community professionals. This is the second year that Leanne has been selected for this award, and the first year for Sara.
PhD student Catherine Cottrell has been awarded an NSF doctoral dissertation improvement grant. Her work is titled "Youth Citizenship, Civic Education, and Spaces of Belonging in Tallinn, Estonia." With the aid of a Foreign Language Area Studies fellowship, she completed an intensive language training at the University of Pittsburgh in preparation for her dissertation work.
PhD student, Hu Wang, won second place in the student paper competition at the 20th International Conference on GeoInformatics for his paper entitled, "Spatial Scan Statistics Analysis of County-Level Population Growth Due to Net Migration in the Continental United States." The award was presented at the Hong Kong conference on June 15, 2012.
Dr. Jerry Mitchell is the 2012 recipient of the Higher Education Distinguished Teaching Award from the National Council for Geographic Education. This award recognizes Jerry's "extraordinary contributions to the teaching and learning of geography at the post-secondary level." The award will be presented at the NCGE National Conference, October 6 in San Marcos, TX.
PhD student Larianne Collins has been awarded an NSF doctoral dissertation improvement grant. Her work is titled "Tradition or Technology?: The Impact of Paper Versus Digital Map Technology on Students' Spatial Thinking Skill Acquisition."
PhD student Peng Gao has received a College of Arts and Sciences Dean's Dissertation Fellowship for the 2012-2013 academic year. Peng's working dissertation title is "Applying novel regionalization methods to the study of biotic distributions and connectivity."

Dr. Susan L. Cutter is the 2011-2012 Munich Re Foundation Chair on Social Vulnerability and will preside over the 2012 Summer Academy. The Summer Academy is designed to bring PhD students together with senior United Nations University and Munich Re Foundation scientists, international experts, and renown academic professors to facilitate the mutual exchange of research and scholarship on climate change and social vulnerability. Dr. David Cowen, Carolina Distinguished Professor Emeritus, has been inducted along with Dr. Luc Anselin, Mr. Jack Dangermond, Dr. Gerard Rushton, and Dr. Waldo Tobler as a member of the UCGIS Fellows. They will be formally presented at the upcoming UCGIS symposium (http://www.ucgis.org/symposium2012/).
They join the distinguished group of current UCGIS fellows who have contributed to the advancement of geographic information science and technology. The grade of Fellow is bestowed on the recipient who has had an extraordinary record of accomplishments in any of the spatial disciplines and Communities of Practice that use spatial information to complement and support their business operations or personal activities. Master's student Brittany Cook was awarded a nationally competitive Foreign Language Area Studies scholarship to study Arabic at an intensive summer program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Brittany will begin doctoral studies at the University of Kentucky in the fall.
Dr. Amy Mills was awarded a 2012 American Research Institute in Turkey Fellowship in the Humanities and Social Sciences in Turkey for summer research. The project is titled: “Istanbul in Satirical Images: Modernity, Urban Social Geography, and National Identity in Republican Era Turkey.
Graduate students Leanne Sulewski, Mike Dubois, Yi Chang, Sara Flecher, Shufan Liu and Gao Peng were awarded second place in the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) 2012 Annual GeoLeague Challenge. Their research project in this competition was "Object-oriented Classfiication Solution for Updating the National Coastal Wetlands Inventory".
Doctoral student Manali Baruah will be conducting year long research as part of the Responsible Forest Governance Initiative (RFGI), an Africa-wide comparative environmental governance research and training program of Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and The University of Illinois.
Manali will be working in the Wassa Amenfi West district of Ghana and will be part of a team of 35 researchers from around the world working in 10 countries in Sub Saharan Africa, focusing on forestry and rural livelihoods in the context of Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) and climate-adaptation interventions.
Congratulations to doctoral student Elbie Bentley on her recongintion at the 39th CaGIS Annual Map Design Competition. Her submission "Natural Hazards of South Carolina" received the Arthur Robinson Award for Best Printed Map and her map "Religious Diversity in South Carolina" received Honorable Mention in the same category.

Dr. Will Graf won the Water Resources Specialty Group Distinguished Career Award.
USC graduate students won both of the Coastal and Marine Specialty Group student paper competitions. Nate Kettle (supervised by Kirstin Dow) won the human dimensions award and Patrick Barrineau (supervised by Jean Ellis) won the physical sciences award. Graduate student Caglar Koylu earned the second place in the 2012 AAG GIS Specialty Group (GISSG) Honors Competition for Student Papers in Geographic Information Science.
Geographic Alliance staff member Monti Caughman received the Outstanding Support for Geography Education Award at the National Council for Geographic Educators 2011 Conference. “The Outstanding Support for Geography Education Award is designed to recognize and honor individuals whose work takes place outside of the formal classroom, but who have made outstanding contributions to support geography education or geography educators.”
Professor John Winberry (1945-2012), Distinguished Professor Emeritus
The Department of Geography mourns the loss of our colleague and friend, John Winberry. John passed away on March 8th, 2012. We extend our condolences to John's wife Carol. Professor Winberry taught cultural geography and regional geography courses from 1971 until his retirement in 2004. He served as Geography Department Chairman, 1990-1993, and Associate Dean of the Graduate School, 1999-2002. He was editor of the Southeastern Geographer, 1988-1991 and earned the Southeastern Division of the Association of American Geographers (SEDAAG) Outstanding Service Award in 2001. He touched the lives of many students and colleagues with his leadership, compassion, and wit.
His career was his calling
He lived a full and interesting life
He loved his family, friends, and students, and they loved him in return
He had fun

Dr. David Cowen (Carolina Distinguished Professor Emeritus) been awarded the 2012 Robert T. Aangenbrug Distinguished Service Award from the Geographic Information Science and Systems Specialty Group of the AAG. The AAG GISSG established its Distinguished Career Award in 2004 and named it in honor of Robert T. Aangeenbrug. The GISSG-SG makes this award to a scholar in Geographic Information Science and Systems for their substantial contributions to the field.
