Dolomite Megabreccia - Solution Collapse or What? Sadly, our scheduled drive down Titus Canyon Road was canceled because
the recent precipitation made the upper section of the canyon
impassable due to mud and snow. Instead, we made a much shorter hiking
trip up the canyon from Death Valley floor to see this spectacular
megabreccia exposure of large clasts of Noonday Dolomite (blue-gray)
suspended in a calcite (white) matrix.
The students came up with several innovative hypotheses for the formation
of this outcrop, but we decided that most lines of evidence support the idea
that this was the result of a very ancient cavern collapse after the
deposition and subsequent burial. |
