The Campus GIS Support Program
Q: Do I need to be a member or pay any fees to
participate in the Campus GIS Support Program?
A: The program exists because
of contributions from the College of Arts & Sciences and participation from
other colleges, schools, institutes, centers and University units. Participation can occur on one of two
levels: as a Center, Institute or academic department, or as an individual
(where that unit’s interest does not require participation at the unit level). The
contributions accrued from the aggregate participants fund the license fees.
Q: How much does it cost to participate?
A: There are two methods
of participation (listed above). The costs for FY 2012-13
are: $2750 for a unit-level participation or $750 for any individual's (or per machine) participation.
Q: How often is the fee assessed?
A: Each fiscal year the
Geography Department assesses the feasibility of offering the services –
and ties it to a funding model that will meet the needs to maintain the full-campus license with ESRI (software provider). Participation grants you a
year’s access.
Q: What benefits do I get from participation?
A: Entering into an MOA will provide you the following benefits:
-
access to current ESRI Desktop software for home or office machines use on University-sponsored projects
- technical support on ESRI Desktop products
- acess to ESRI's Virtual Campus courses that are provided via a Campus License
- Initial consulation on GIS-related projects
- access to digital data holdings (where not restricted by third party license)
- use or loan of GIS-related devices associated with the Campus GIS Program
- instructional resources for the classroom
BACK TO LIST OF FAQS
Q: What software can I get as a participant in the Campus
GIS Support Program?
A: The MOA covers the use of all the GIS products provided by ESRI as part of a Campus License and covered the full support of all desktop products, along with many of the other server and mobile products, as well as some datasets. Ask Kevin or Lynn for more information on what is available or for steps to obtain software.
BACK TO LIST OF FAQS
Q: What kind of a license do I need to run the ArcGIS
Desktop products (ArcMap, ArcCatalog, etc.)?
A: All machines that use these
products need a license. We prefer machines connected to the campus network to point to our license server to obtain their license. Students are given the option of checking out licenses from the server for up to 120 days. This is true for all users off the University network. Campus User authentication is required. In cases where machines may not be permanently on the University network for an extended period of time, an individual license that has a yearly expiration date in July can be generated.
Q: If I need to learn something about GIS in general or
specific software, what is available?
A: ESRI makes available to us, as part of the yearly license fee, a large suite of on-line Virtual Campus courses. see: http://training.esri.com/campus/catalog/licenses/courselist.cfm?id=43 for a list of those available free of charge.
Spatial and Attribute Data
Q: Is any free data available that can be used in GIS?
A: The Program maintains a
GIS data server that both hosts data for campus participants and provides links
to other entities where data is hosted. ESRI, as part of our site license,
provides us with a multi-DVD series of datasets which can be freely used.

GIScience content classes
Q: Are there for-credit classes I can take that teach
GIScience concepts and technology?
A: Although these are not
part of the Campus GIS Support Program, a number of course are offered. Most
are offered by the Geography Dept.
The current course listing can be accessed here.
