Teaches U.S. history with special interests in the Civil War and Reconstruction era and in cultural and intellectual history.

Professor Brown is the author of Dorothea Dix, New England Reformer (Harvard, 1998), the co-editor of Hope and Glory: Essays on the Legacy of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment (University of Massachusetts, 2001), and the editor of The Public Art of Civil War Commemoration: A Brief History with Documents (Bedford/Saint Martin's, 2004).

Current Activities

My long-term project is a book tentatively entitled The Reconstruction of American Memory: Civic Monuments of the Civil War. At the moment I am completing the editing work on a collaborative set of historiographical essays, Reconstructions: New Perspectives on the Postbellum United States, to be published by Oxford University Press in 2006.
