Sherman F. Smith, Jr. Memorial Scholarships

University of South Carolina, USA

University of Warwick, UK

Former Warwick Scholars and the USC History Department are committed to making study abroad accessible to all talented students, regardless of financial need.  The Sherman F. Smith, Jr. Memorial Scholarships support USC students at Warwick with grants of up to $1,500 for semester students and $4,500 for academic-year students.  Applicants for the USC – Warwick exchange are automatically considered for the Sherman F. Smith, Jr. Award.

The endowment for the USC – Warwick Exchange began in 1996 when a group of former exchange students created the Warwick Alumni Association to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the program.  As we pass our fiftieth anniversary, that original endowment has grown past the million-dollar mark.  Now called the Sherman F. Smith. Jr. Memorial Scholarship, it provides generous support for our USC exchange students and ensures that a year at Warwick costs the same (or even less!) than a year at Carolina.

USC - Warwick alumni remain involved in the program, helping to recruit Sherman F. Smith Scholars by offering information and encouragement to potential applicants, talking about the value of their Warwick experiences at the annual information session in January, and participating in the selection interviews with applicants in March.  Our alumni network offers mentoring and advice to Warwick scholars as they return to USC, graduate, and move on to graduate education or enter the workforce.
