"Imperial Allegiance and Jewish Citizenship in the Modern Middle East"

Julia Phillips Cohen
Jewish Studies and History, Vanderbilt University

This talk explores how various Ottoman Jewish leaders of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries attempted to express new concepts and practices of imperial citizenship and to diffuse them among their coreligionists. The forms of Ottoman Jewish patriotism that emerged in the process were part of a dynamic, complex, and sometimes ambivalent project undertaken by Jewish imperial elites intent upon assuring a secure place for their community within a centralizing, modernizing Islamic state.
