"Maurice Mayer of Charleston: German Radical, Revolutionary, Rabbi," lecture by Dr. Anton HiekeMonday, November 11, 2013 - 3:30pm
Rabbi Maurice Mayer of Charleston is the focus of this lecture, a man who embodies many facets of the time as an active member of the 1848/49 Revolution in Germany; an immigrant who adapted extremely rapidly to his new home, quickly embracing a southern identity; and an example of someone whose mobility was both transnational and transregional. He was also a German radical Reformer of Judaism but as he served an American congregation, he was the only one of the Reformers who managed to bridge the gap between German Reform Judaism and American Jews in general.
Location: University of South Carolina Honors College, Gressette Room.
