Stephen Dowden Lecture: Kafka, Vienna, and the Question of Modernism

Thursday, April 9, 2015 -
4:15pm to 5:15pm

Stephen D. Dowden, Brandeis University

Kafka, Vienna, and the Question of Modernism

Vienna was a birthplace of aesthetic modernism. It was the home of Wittgenstein, Mahler, Schoenberg, Freud, Schiele, and Karl Kraus. But Kafka was from Prague. Is Kafka's modernism similar to or different from that of Vienna? This lecture will explore some of the common ground between Kafka and the modernists of Vienna, especially his unexpected affinities with Arnold Schoenberg.

LOCATION: Gambrell Hall, Room 250
