The colloquium will focus on trans-regional mobility of Jews from and to the south during times of sectional conflict, i.e., 1860-80. Dr. Hieke's article on "The Trans-Regional Mobility of Jews from Macon, GA, 1860-80" will be an anchor for the discussion, which will begin with his presentation of his key arguments. The discussion should cover his conclusions and their implications, as well as more general questions, such as Jews' position in society at the time, the composition of the Jewish minority, and so on.
