Marc T. Canner - Ph.D.
Professor of Intercultural Studies at MBI and Executive Director of the Institute of Strategic Languages & Cultures, Spokane, WA
Why did you decide to do an MA or PhD in linguistics?
I decided to do a PhD in Ling because my goal was (and remains) to have an impact on best practices in second and foreign language pedagogy and on SLA research.
Tell us about your current job.
I currently hold two positions: 1. Professor of Intercultural Studies, MBI Spokane, WA, where I direct a new undergraduate program in TESOL; 2. Executive Director of the Institute of Strategic Languages & Cultures, now located in Spokane, WA.
Why did you choose our program? Did you get what you wanted from the Linguistics Program?
I chose the Ling program at USC because it was both convenient (I lived in the Columbia area at the time), and because the program offered what I believe are excellent opportunities for study and research in SLA and Linguistics in general.
What is your favorite thing in Columbia, SC?
My favorite thing in Columbia, SC (after my daughter and son, who currently live there) is how relaxed both the atmosphere and people are there. The people are very warm and friendly.
