Research Interests

Interlanguage development and form-function mapping; psycholinguistic processing strategies, interlanguage pragmatics and L2 irony; task-induced variation in second-language production, development of metacognitive strategies through pedagogical intervention

Dr. Malovrh specializes in SLA, applied Hispanic linguistics, and foreign language pedagogy. Working within a cognitive framework, he investigates interlanguage development and the underlying psycholinguistic strategies constraining it. Coauthored with James F. Lee, his new book, The Developmental Dimension in Instructed Second Language Learning (Bloomsbury, 2013), examines the stages of form-function mapping guiding the interlanguage development of Spanish object pronouns by comparing language comprehension with oral production data. Professor Malovrh’s research also explores variability in L2 performance by examining the effects of working memory and modality in L2 production. Most recently, he was awarded a grant to design a study of the L2 acquisition and expression of verbal irony in Spanish.  He has lived and worked in Chile, the United Kingdom, and Asia, and directed USC’s study abroad program in Costa Rica in 2010.
