Research/ Academic Interests

I am interested in many aspects of language change and variation, with a focus on American English. Specifically, my main interest is in language use in New Orleans and how it relates to ideas of: ethnicity, place and identity, the development and maintenance of unique language varieties, among others. I primarily use quantitative methods to study phonological and syntactic variation, but sociophonetics will play an increasingly important role in future research. Other interests include: the development of new, nonstandard dialect forms (such as the contraction 'tryna' from 'trying to') and how these might better inform aspects of linguistic theory in general; second dialect acquisition; and linguistic ideologies in the public sphere.
