Maxcy Visiting Fellow Public Lecture: Dr. Thomas Wide

Speaker: Dr. Thomas Wide, Assistant Director for Special Projects at the Freer and Sackler Galleries (Smithsonian). In 2013, Dr. Wide became Managing Director of Turquoise Mountain, an NGO devoted to preserving Afghanistan’s rich artisanal traditions. Turquoise Mountain works with national and international agencies, famed arts venues, and prestigious retailers to train local artisans and fund reconstruction projects. Currently, hundreds of artisans work across Afghanistan with Turquoise Mountain, both as independent businesses and on preservation projects. This work is the subject of a temporary exhibit currently on display at the Freer|Sackler under Dr. Wide’s curatorial direction.
