If You Miss Me at the Back of the Bus
June 7, 2013 - September 20, 2013
Annual Invitational Exhibition
Joining institutions across the city of Columbia in marking 1963 as a seminal year in our nation’s progress toward a more perfect union, on September 11, 2013, the University of South Carolina will launch a series of events honoring the 50th anniversary of the desegregation of its Columbia campus. This occasion has become an opportunity for McKissick invited artists to reflect on a seminal story of southern life—the civil rights movement--that forever changed the culture of the college campus, the southeast and the nation. If You Miss Me at the Back illustrates how the 1960s civil rights movement reshaped the southern experience—our communities, culture and environment.
Diverse Voices: Discovering Community Through Traditional Arts
Opens August 12, 2013
2nd floor, North Gallery
McKissick Museum has been collecting, documenting, and celebrating the traditional arts of the region for over thirty years. While this has been a primary focus of the museum from the beginning, there has never been a dedicated gallery space to tell this story on an ongoing basis. The “Diverse Voices” exhibition is designed to address this need.
The objects and thematic content in this gallery will change on an annual basis. The museum’s folklife collection is extensive and there are many stories to tell.
Come Together - 2013 GALA
September 20, 2013
This year’s gala—COME TOGETHER—will be held on Friday, September 20th, 7-10pm. The event has been themed to build on the momentum of University-wide and City-wide efforts throughout 2013 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of 1963 as a watershed moment in the Civil Rights Movement. We have invited artists to submit artwork for our 2013 gala art exhibition--If You Miss Me at the Back of the Bus--that reflects the ongoing impact of the Civil Rights Movement
