Richard Burnside: Who is King?

May 6 through August 6, 2016, 2nd floor, North Gallery

Richard Burnside: Who is King? is the first museum retrospective of Richard Burnside’s artwork, presenting its full scope from his earliest works in the 1980s to his most recent work. The exhibition features paintings and drawings, set against interviews conducted with the artist, his friends, and others who collect his work from his hometown of Pendleton, South Carolina. For the first time, Who is King? highlights the artist’s interpretation of his bold, brightly colored figures and asks new questions about them: Who are the kings and queens who figure so prominently in Burnside’s paintings? Why does their appearance change over time? What is our relationship to them and how do they speak across all his work?

The exhibition catalog, Richard Burnside: Who is King?, is now available for purchase.
