Dance

The Bachelor of Arts degree offered by the Dance Program has a focus in classical ballet, although students also receive a sound foundation in the disciplines and principles of modern dance and jazz.  The degree program offers more than 75 technical and theoretical courses.  It provides professional training in performance and pedagogy and prepares students for graduate work and advanced studies in dance.

The curriculum includes daily classical ballet classes at beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels, as well as intensive Pointe work and classical repertory studies.  There are two tracks:  Dance Performance/Choreography and Dance Education.

Gifted undergraduate students can try out for the USC Dance Company, which prepares them for professional careers in the field of dance.  With more than 72 members, the company performs six major concerts each year at Columbia’s Koger Center for the Arts, as well as guest performances up and down the East Coast.  Students audition for the company twice a year. They present ballet, modern dance, and jazz works as well as innovative dance concerts and contemporary pieces.  Company members have performed in Europe and at the National Gala for the American College Dance Festival hosted by the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

Alumni are currently dancing professionally and working as dance teachers and administrators in colleges, universities, and other educational and professional organizations.
