The USC Department of Philosophy offers programs of study leading to the MA and PhD degrees.
The Graduate Program at the University of South Carolina is dedicated to providing a high quality graduate education in philosophy to talented students who wish to pursue advanced study, possibly towards a career in academia or related fields. Students are admitted to both the Masters and the PhD programs.
The program emphasizes historical awareness of the perennial problems in philosophy, as well as an opportunity to pursue focused interests in several specialized areas, such as the history of philosophy, philosophy of science, normative and practical philosophy (including ethics, health care ethics, and bioethics), and philosophy of language and linguistics, among others.
Faculty members work in a wide range of areas of philosophy, many of them in collaboration with various units on campus including the Medical School, the Center for Bioethics, Classics, Comparative Literature, History, Linguistics, Physics, and Women's Studies.
Please feel free to contact our Director of Graduate Studies with any questions you have about the program.
