In Memoriam, Senator and Pastor Clementa Pinckney
This morning’s unfolding tragedy in Charleston, at the historic Emanuel AME Church, includes the news that State Senator, the Rev. Clementa Pinckney was apparently among those killed. Rev. Pinckney was a distinguished 1999 graduate of the MPA Program and remained a friend and supporter, delivering the keynote address to the program graduates in the May 2010 ceremony. He has been an important voice in the state’s political life since his election to the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1997. Washington Post columnist, David Broder, called Rev. Pinckney a "political spirit lifter for suprisingly not becoming cynical about politics."
We grieve with his family (wife Jennifer and their two daughters, Eliana and Malana), his faith community, his community and constituents, and the state, which has lost an important leader.Thursday, June 18, 2015
