South Carolina Archaeology Month 2012

Civil War Shipwrecks in South Carolina

Following below is a list of the calendar of events and programs presented during the
Twenty-First Annual South Carolina Archaeology Month (October 1-31, 2012).
Archaeology Month events will be offered in October, but there will also be listings of
other programs offered in September and following Archaeology Month in November
2012, as well as into next year. Events and programs have been developed by dedicated
professionals, avocationlists, and organizations in order to bring our state's prehistoric
and historic past to life for all ages. Through such public outreach efforts, the
archaeological community hopes to build regional and local public support for the
preservation of our Native American, African, and European heritage.

By sponsoring South Carolina Archaeology Month, the archaeological community of South Carolina intends to:

1) Stimulate public pride in our state's 14,000-year archaeological heritage,
2) Increase public understanding of why archaeological research is important,
3) Heighten public awareness of how many archaeological resources are lost each year
in South Carolina,
4) Educate the public about what they can do to help protect, preserve, and study the state's archaeological resources, and
5) Get more people involved in legitimate archaeological activities.

Archaeology Month activities will begin in October 2012 with a variety of statewide
events focusing on prehistory, history, cultural heritage, and historic preservation.
The fall event focuses on cultural programs offered in every corner of the state
including county museums, county, state, and national parks. Each year the month-long
event produces a topical poster focusing on current archaeological research in
the Palmetto state. This year's theme is entitled "Civil War Shipwrecks in South
Carolina," which features archaeological investigations within state waters and
three miles off shore for our 190 miles of coast line. Please contact Nena Powell Rice
at the SC Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology at USC at (803) 576-6573 for
further information. Please come by SCIAA to pick up your free poster when they become available..

There will be a special lecture series offered in various locations throughout the state
focusing on the underwater archaeological investigations in our riverine, coastal marsh,
bays, and offshore during the Civil War. See below for a link to these programs.

The 25th Annual Archaeology Field Day, sponsored by the Archaeological Society of
South Carolina (ASSC), is scheduled to be held at Santee State Park, near Santee, South Carolina on Saturday, October 20, 2012 from 10 AM to 4 PM. Please check out the ASSC website, http://www.assc.net for updates as we get closer to the date.

There will be dozens of statewide organizations offering programs in most corners of
South Carolina in the fall of 2012 and into 2013. Keep this listing as a reference.
If you find artifacts on your land or you read something that intrigues you, call one of the
archaeologists listed here. They have expertise about the prehistory and history of South
Carolina and can answer your questions.
