Director/Alum Stephen Cone To Offer Workshops & Screen New Film

This month, professional filmmaker Stephen Cone (BA Theatre, '02) will host two workshops for theatre and media arts students which will teach skills in on-camera acting and directing.  While here, Cone will also screen his latest full-length feature film, "Black Box."

The workshops will be held from 1pm - 5pm on October 18th and 19th in the acting studios of the Booker T. Washington building.  Interested workshop participants should reserve their space by contacting Associate Professor Erica Tobolski by email at tobolski@sc.edu or by phone at 803-777-5242.

The free screening will be held October 19th at 7pm in the Booker T. Washington Auditorium, and is open to the public.

Black Box contains nudity, adult language and explicitly adult situations.  No one under 17 will be admitted to the screening.

Cone's last full-length motion picture, The Wise Kids (which he also wrote), was a hit at festivals across the country, earning eight awards, including Grand Jury Prizes for Outstanding US Feature and Outstanding Screenwriting at LA's Outfest in 2011.  The film was recently picked up for distribution on DVD/VOD by Wolfe Video.

Black Box tells the story of a strong-willed graduate student in theatre who directs a group of fresh-faced undergraduate actors in an adaptation of a gothic 80s young adult novel, a process that alters them all in unexpected ways. The arrival of the book's author (Austin Pendleton - A Beautful Mind, Oz, The Mirror Has Two Faces) only furthers the ensemble's journey into the very personal, very real origins of narrative.

In his review of Black Box, Chicago Tribune critic Michael Phillips wrote about Cone, "I hope [he] keeps writing and making movies because he has what a lot of other writer-directors do not: an interest in character; a facility for drawing fine, subdued on-camera work from stage performers; and a knack for pulling together a variety of sympathetic characters at a crucial point in their collective lives."
