MFA in Scenic Design

The MFA in Scenic Design program offers a unique hands-on approach to learning the art of scenography which balances high quality production work with rigorous studio and academic study under the guidance of master designer, Professor Nic Ularu. Over the course of six semesters, students normally realize three main stage theatre productions and complete a required financially-supported professional internship in their final year.

The MFA in Scenic Design program provides competencies in theatrical design through an immersive environment geared toward producing the next generation of design artists.  Working alongside master faculty and prominent professionals from our extensive guest artist program, students create fully-realized designs in one of our many department facilities.  In addition to a large proscenium theatre (Drayton Hall Theatre) and a highly flexible arena space featuring a hydraulic, full-stage lift (Longstreet Theatre), the department maintains a well-equipped fabrication studio in which to realize your creative visions.  Students also gain other experiences, whether as scenic charge artist, properties master or a variety of additional leadership roles.

Throughout their time in the program, students build a diverse creative portfolio, while also receiving opportunities to make important professional contacts.   Thanks to the wide-ranging connections of program head Nic Ularu, students find internships both nationally and internationally, as well as opportunities to present at major conferences such as the Prague Quadrennial, the World Stage Design Conference and United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) Conference.
