meeting noun A gathering of people, usually for a religious worship service or a series of such services. [originally applied to services of dissenters (as opposed to those of the established church) in the British Isles; OED meeting verbal noun 3b dates this usage from 1593, DARE labels it "chiefly Northeast, South Midland" in the U.S.]
