The Phonetics of Great Smoky Mountain Speech

Shortly after Hall completed his dissertation at Columbia University in 1942, it was published by Columbia University Press, in the American Dialect Society's short-lived monograph series.  Three-quarters of a century later, it remains not just the only comprehensive account of the pronunciation of an Appalachian variety of English, but also the only one of any American variety of the language.  It remains a remarkable achievement still of great value to students of the region's speech.
