Dr. Christopher Cowan of the Medical University of South Carolina spoke with NPR to discuss his research on the genetic component of autism spectrum disorder. Cowan's lab is using animal models to study genes associated with autism and autism-associated symptoms; studying behavior in animals with autism-related genetic mutations can provide clues to potential therapeutic strategies.
