Hobby Licensee of the Quarter: Matt Weas (#3742)
Recognizing excellence and outstanding involvement with the SC Hobby License Program.
by Nate Fulmer, MRD
Each quarter, we recognize a hobby licensee who goes above and beyond the call of duty. He or she has submitted excellent reports, been an exceptional volunteer, has gone out of their way to preserve cultural and/or natural heritage in the state, or has been a general inspiration to other licensees, the public, or us. Each quarter we will pick a licensee that resembles one or more of these noteworthy traits. Hopefully, it will be you! If you know of someone who fits some or all of these categories and would like to nominate them, please send us a brief email of who and why you think they should be Hobby Licensee of the Quarter.
The honor for the First Quarter of 2017 goes to licensee Matthew Weas (#3742). Matt has been involved with the program off-and-on for many years now. Like his father Joe Harvey (#3052), Matt has a passion for South Carolina history and he spends a lot of his time sharing his enthusiasm for the fossils and artifacts he finds.
Matt has attended more than one of our Artifact Workshops and he brought his wife to our most recent offering at the College of Charleston in February. Over the years, Matt has found some impressive specimens diving in and around the Lowcountry. He recently reported some possible prehistoric bone implements recovered from a site in the Cooper River to us. Using the scale and cell phone photography tips we provided during our workshop, Matt’s photos of these tools are remarkable (Example at top).
As Matt continues his involvement with the program, we look forward to working with him more as his keen eye for often-overlooked material is a skill we admire.
Thank you, Matt! Good luck in the water this season.
