Ryan Bradley Joins MRD in Columbia
New staff member at MRD!
Following a lengthy search involving many well-qualified candidates, we're pleased to announce Ryan Bradley has accepted the Underwater Archaeologist II position in Columbia. Ryan earned his MA in Maritime Studies and Nautical Archaeology at East Carolina University back in 2015 and has spent the past 2 years working as an Education and Outreach Specialist with the UNC Coastal Studies Institute on Roanoke Island, NC. Most recently, under the tutelage of renowned underwater archaeologist, Gordon Watts, Ryan participated in a remote sensing survey of Hatteras Inlet with Tidewater Atlantic Research. He also has extensive dive experience in a variety of environments and worked as a divemaster on the Outer Banks as well as the Caribbean, eventually attaining the level of instructor.
Ryan volunteered with the MRD on the Charleston Harbor Stone Fleet Survey 2 years in a row back in 2013-2014 stemming from his interest in the purpose-sunk whaling vessels involved. An experienced educator, Ryan looks forward to working with school systems and the public throughout South Carolina to share in the wonder, history and science of submerged cultural resources. His first task will be to develop a photogrammetry program with the MRD that will showcase underwater wreck sites for further study and educational opportunties.
With his experience, Ryan will play an essential role in the planning and conducting of archaeological research with the MRD, implementing education and outreach programs, administering dive safety operations and coordinating Federal Section 106 compliance reviews. Ryan has just the right combination of knowledge and enthusiasm to be an excellent asset to the team. We welcome him and look forward to his contributions in furthering the mission of SCIAA MRD.
